In the UK, employers must conduct Noise at Work Assessments to protect employees from excessive noise exposure. These assessments help identify workplace noise risks and ensure compliance with Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005, as outlined by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

A workplace noise assessment pinpoints areas of high noise levels, helping businesses implement effective noise control measures. By reducing noise-related risks, employers can safeguard employees' physical and mental well-being while maintaining a safe and compliant work environment.

Hi there, I'm James, Director and co-owner here at Peninsular Acoustics.

I've dedicated the past 18 years to understanding and managing noise in all its forms. My journey began with a first-class honours degree in Acoustics, followed by honing my skills at the renowned Building Research Establishment (BRE). Since then, I've held leading roles in top UK consultancies, gaining invaluable experience across diverse projects.

I'm a fully qualified project manager and a corporate member of the UK Institute of Acoustics (IOA), currently serving as the Chairman of their Building Acoustics Group. I'm also the co-author of national guidance documents, ensuring my expertise stays at the forefront of the industry.

My passion lies in assessing ventilation and overheating within buildings, creating spaces that are not only comfortable but also acoustically sustainable. We've tackled projects of all sizes and types, both in the UK and internationally, so no challenge is too big or too small.

At Peninsular Acoustics, we understand the importance of delivering solutions tailored to your specific needs. Whether you're in the residential, commercial, or industrial sector, we're here to provide comprehensive noise assessments and actionable recommendations to ensure your project meets regulatory requirements and exceeds expectations.

FAQs

A Noise at Work Assessment is required for planning applications to ensure that any proposed development—whether noise-sensitive or noise-generating—fits within the existing noise climate of the area. This assessment helps determine whether the noise levels at the site will be appropriate for the intended use, ensuring that the development won't create undue noise-related disturbances or risks for surrounding areas.

Additionally, occupational noise assessments are mandatory if employees are likely to be exposed to noise levels exceeding the lower noise exposure action values specified by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). Under the Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005, employers are required to prevent or mitigate any risks to employee health and safety due to noise exposure, making noise assessments essential for both regulatory compliance and the overall safety of workers in a new or renovated workplace.

The Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005 require employers to assess and manage workplace noise risks to protect employees’ hearing. Key requirements include:

  1. Noise Risk Assessment: Employers must identify areas with excessive noise levels that may harm employees.

  2. Reducing Noise Exposure: Where necessary, employers must reduce noise through engineering controls, work practice changes, or personal protective equipment (PPE).

  3. Hearing Protection: If noise levels can't be reduced, employers must provide suitable hearing protection.

  4. Employee Awareness: Employers must inform and train staff on noise risks and protection.

  5. Ongoing Monitoring: Employers must regularly monitor noise levels and review control measures to ensure compliance.

The Noise Regulations set specific action values that require employers to take action:

  1. Lower Exposure Action Values:

    • Daily/weekly exposure: 80 dB

    • Peak sound pressure: 135 dB

  2. Upper Exposure Action Values:

    • Daily/weekly exposure: 85 dB

    • Peak sound pressure: 137 dB

Employers must take steps to control and reduce noise exposure based on these levels to protect workers' hearing and health.

Using a qualified acoustic consultant to carry out a noise assessment for planning applications has a number of benefits, including:

  • They have the expertise and experience to carry out a comprehensive and accurate assessment.
  • They can advise on the best way to mitigate noise impacting on a development, or noise impacting from the development to other nearby residents & businesses.
  • They can help to ensure that your planning application is approved.
